Arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN): A Step-by-Step Guide
Landing in Ho Chi Minh City? Here is what happens after you step off the plane at Tan Son Nhat — and how to make it smoother.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is Vietnam’s busiest airport and the main gateway to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). It sits inside the city, which makes it convenient — and busy. Here is what to expect on arrival.
Which terminal will I use?
- International flights use the international terminal (T2).
- Domestic flights use the domestic terminals (T1 and the newer T3).
If you have a domestic connection after an international arrival, allow plenty of time to move between terminals and check in again. Always check your airline’s information for your exact terminal.
Step 1: From the aircraft to immigration
Follow the “Arrivals” signs to immigration. International arrivals can be busy, especially when several long-haul and regional flights land close together in the evening and late at night.
Have ready: your passport, your visa or e-visa (if you need one) and your onward or return details. Rules depend on your nationality and change from time to time — check before you fly. The official e-visa portal is evisa.gov.vn.
Step 2: Immigration
Queue for the foreigners’ lanes, hand over your documents and wait for your passport to be stamped. Priority lanes may be available at some times — this is where a fast track assistant helps most, by guiding you to the right place and through the process.
Step 3: Baggage claim and customs
Check the screens for your flight’s belt. Trolleys are available in the hall. After collecting your bags, go through customs; your baggage may be scanned.
Step 4: The arrivals hall
The arrivals hall is where it gets lively: drivers with signs, taxi offers and many families waiting for relatives. Useful things you will find:
- SIM cards and eSIM help from Vietnamese mobile networks.
- Currency exchange and ATMs.
- Taxi and ride-hailing pickup areas.
If you booked meet & greet, your representative is waiting at the agreed meeting point with your name sign — no searching through the crowd.
Step 5: Getting into the city
District 1 is close by distance, but traffic decides the time: allow roughly 30–60 minutes depending on the hour. Options include taxis, ride-hailing apps and a private transfer booked in advance — the easiest choice with lots of luggage, children or a late arrival.
Tips for a smoother arrival
- Download your e-visa and booking details to your phone before you fly — airport Wi-Fi can be slow.
- Share your flight number with whoever is meeting you, so they can follow delays.
- Keep some small change for the first purchases.
- Late-night arrivals: pre-book your transfer.
- Traveling with kids or older parents: consider fast track with baggage help.
Make it effortless
